Resurrection Sunday @ McFarm

Seems apropos to acknowledge a resurrection of sorts around McFarm these days…

Ten years ago we bred our last mare (we thought). We had had a good run at breeding and MacArthur was a wonderful stallion and the mares and foals were so much fun it didn’t seem like a business but we thought we were through… We raised some beauties. Learned a ton! The last foal we had back then – nine years ago – we still have today and is now our new foundation mare…

It all started when I bought a mare already in foal from Linda Allen. Her name was Wags. She was by Wagner out of Heatwave (aka Persian San). She was in foal to a horse called Bo. And, the foal we named Grace was later renamed Talisman. I rode her in the IJF as a four-year old – then had a foal as a five-year old (Devon’s jumper, Jambo) and we sold her as a six-year old…

We watched Grace (as Talisman) go on to be AHSA Horse of the year five times in a row in the Adult Amature jumper division with Diane Bender (1995-2000). Then luck would have it – we got her back years later and Devon rode her a bit getting a taste for the Childrens’ Jumpers with Talisman and her first foal. We bred Grace again before she got too old and that was 10 years ago… almost to the day…

Last Friday – Good Friday – we bred that foal of Grace’s, Almaybe, and her two pasture mates (my show jumpers) Elle and Zan Chin. The fact that we all three mares got going this early had productive cycles and were ready to breed almost seems like a miracle at this point – if they are all pregnant then we will really see it as a miracle! It was definitely orchestrated very carefully.

Anyone who hasn’t bred horses before won’t really understand the complexities and coordination required… and doing three at once from potentially three different stallions in different parts of the world… a completely daunting task to pull off in one day. A logistical headache to say the least. But it worked – we did it – all three mares covered in March! On Good Friday…

The breeding operation at McFarm is now resurrected and back in full swing.

Cross your fingers for at least a couple more weeks…

Hoping for a Cartouche Z / Zan Chin,  Jestar Du Lozon / Highland Elegance and a Jestar Du Lozon / Almaybe baby…
